The Great Generational Showdown: X’s and Zzzzzzzss

I was going to start this post by asking if you’ve ever watched a Gen X, Millennial or Gen Z try to use the same piece of technology, because that’s the point when the generational differences truly shine through, but then I realised I didn’t have a clue what Xs and Zs even meant, so I had to look it up and check which one I was. What I learned was nothing unites the generations like actually comparing them. Gen X keeps the world running. Millennial’s keep the world feeling. Gen Z keeps the world interesting.

Gen X

I came to the conclusion that Gen X is the human equivalent of a swiss army knife, the ‘I’ll figure it out’ generation. They grew up with rotary phones, survived dial‑up internet and now troubleshoot smart TVs with the confidence of someone who has every right to put the next generation in their place, because they’ve ‘lived it’.

Traits of self‑reliance, low maintenance and practicality are what powers the Gen X.  If an Xer’s Wi‑Fi goes down, they don’t panic. They unplug the router, stare into the middle distance for 10 seconds, and plug it back in, expert at performing the ‘of and on’ ritual like the ultimate pro.

Gen X still print a boarding pass and send a text with the energy of someone paying per message. “OK.” “Fine.” “Call me.” No emojis, just pure vibes.  Gen X is basically the friend who brings snacks, a first‑aid kit, and jumper cables to a casual picnic “just in case.”

Millennials

Millennials are the generation that grew up believing they could be anything, the overthinking optimist until the economy said, “yeah, let’s not get carried away, eh.”

Traits of chronic multitasking, nostalgia addiction and polite anxiety fuel the traditional Millennial. That and thinking they can create a rock star blog that no one will ever read.

A Millennial can answer emails, listen to a podcast, reheat coffee for the third time, and question their life choices simultaneously.  They treat 90s pop culture like a religion and say “no worries if not” even when there are very much all the worries. If you want to summon a Millennial, just pop on a Friends rerun or play some Backstreet Boys.” Millennials are basically Gen X with more feelings and better skincare routines.

Gen Z

Gen Z is like a tornado of creativity, sarcasm, and oversized water bottles. Gen Z entered the world with Wi‑Fi pre-installed. They’re fluent in memes, allergic to phone calls, and capable of editing a video with one thumb.  They can diagnose a global trend without looking up from their phone and dish out a good old ‘roasting’ all before breakfast.

Traits include digital fluency, blunt honesty and trend velocity.  A Gen Z can fix your phone whilst simultaneously judging you for having 87 open tabs.  If a Millennial says, “I’m a bit tired,” Gen Z says, “I’m on the brink of collapse but it’s fine.”  That’s because they’re busy creating a new trend every 4 minutes. By the time Millennials discover it, Gen Z has already declared it cringe.

So what does it all mean?

I don’t have a clue. But if you put them all in a room, you’ll get; Gen X fixing the Wi‑Fi, Millennials organizing a group chat and Gen Z making a TikTok about the whole thing
